Welcome to the MENA Rule of Law Network Online Forum

To help facilitate ongoing dialogue on the issues addressed in the MENA Conference, the WJP is launching the Rule of Law Network Online Forum. The Online Forum will allow Conference participants to maintain the working relationships they established in Morocco and will facilitate continued cross-disciplinary discussions on the Rule of Law. We hope that the dialogue that took place at the MENA Conference will resonate far beyond the meeting and serve as a catalyst for new debates and actions.

A Message From His Royal Highness Prince El Hassan bin Talal

The Road to Justice in MENA: National, International and Traditional Justice Systems Working Together

We come from a region that is marked by more insecurity than most. We face all kinds of threats, resulting from unresolved conflicts over Territoriality, Identity and Movement (Migration) (TIM) to worsening politico/economic situations leading to poverty and unemployment. Whereas a democratic process based on political pluralism can deter extremist ideologies seeking to undermine the rule of law. The hatred industry is doing too well in terms of the widespread escalation of conventional military hardware and the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. I refer here to the alternate polities of governance and the support offered to dispossessed youth. In less than decade, over half of Middle East’s population will be under 18 and the World Bank reports the need for 100 million job opportunities by 2025. This can lead to two polar options: either we risk the formation of a disaffected bloc of society, or we have an entire generation ripe for radicalization and extremism.

Reflections from the MENA Rule of Law Conference 2010
By Leila Hanafi

In a stimulating and action-oriented atmosphere, over 150 prominent leaders throughout the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region convened on June 25-26, 2010, at the World Justice Project’s (WJP) first  major MENA Regional Rule of Law Conference at Al Akhawayn University in Ifrane, Morocco.  As the staff attorney and programs manager of the World Justice Project, I had the privilege to lead the process of convening such a diverse regional gathering of leaders.

The  Conference represented an unparalleled  opportunity to encourage regional commitment to Rule of Law; promote interdisciplinary understanding of Rule of Law and Access to Justice issues in the broadest sense (legal, political, social, and economic); and develop the cross-fertilization of different ideas among participants through the prism of national, regional, and international standards.
